Helder and Jose Costa grew up in the quiet town of Lagoas, Cantanhede, Portugal — a place where life was simple, resources were few, and family meant everything. In their modest home, the comforting scent of freshly baked bread often filled the air. It wasn’t fancy — just honest, homemade food that brought people together. In 1974, chasing the promise of new opportunity, the Costa family made the bold move to Canada. Like many immigrants, they arrived with little more than determination, grit, and a dream for something more. Caldense Bakery was originally founded in 1968, serving Portuguese breads and pastries to a growing community.
